WORDS FROM THE EAST

Brethren,

   The month of August has been a very interesting month for me personally. I sold my home after living in it for more than 27 years. It is amazing how much STUFF you can accumulate in that many years. Just prior to moving out of my home into an apartment for about 5 weeks, I attended the Grand York Rite Sessions in Tucson. These sessions were interesting and the fellowship amongst the brethren was excellent. My new address is 8028 W Clara Lane, Peoria, Arizona 85382.
   On September 8th we held our Lodge trustee meeting. Our financial position of our lodge is satisfactory, it could be better but we are operating within the budget I presented at the first of the year. The lodge cooler is in bad shape and will need to be replaced before we start using it again in the spring.
   We have purchased and delivered two bicycles to High Desert Middle School in Globe and two bicycles to Kornegay Jr. High in Miami. The principal or staff will set up the rules to win these bicycles. This program is called Bicycles for Books and will be awarded for reading books this year.
   Our next stated meeting will be held on October 9th. We will have lunch immediately following our stated meeting and then confer a first degree on a candidate that resides in Globe. Try to attend this stated meeting or at least the degree conferral at approximately 1 PM.
   We are still trying to find a date that is suitable with the Grand Master of Arizona and New Mexico for the “Search for the Charter”
   The following schools (Lee Bejarano and Kornegay Jr. High from Miami, Copper Rim & High Desert Hills from Globe) have stated they want to participate in our Essay contest this year. The local winners will be presented certificates on November 13th and the top winners will be sent to the Grand Lodge of Arizona for Statewide competition.
   We will also present three Wal-Mart gift certificates to students at High Desert Middle School for perfect attendance. Three brothers donated $25. each for the certificates. If we additional donations we will present more certificates. Principal Steve Doerckson will set up rules to determine how these certificates will be presented.

October 1954

 We were informed that Brother Thomas H Bennetts had passed away in July.
Approval to purchase an addressograph from the Alden Theatre was given.
WM Sidney Fix and SW Robert Lacy conferred the second degree of masonry on Brothers Cecil A Rosson and Stephen S Wusich.

Doric Lodge #26 - 50 years ago

October 1954

A communication was received from United Sugar Company, Sinaloa, Mexico that our brother James D Bowen had passed away in 1953.

THE AGED MASON

He sits on the sidelines

His hair has turned gray.

We pass him by, as if to say,

Sorry, Old Brother, you've had your day.

If we would stop and shake his hand

And tell him we are glad he came,

It would mean so much to a tired old man

Just to feel the warmth of a friendly hand.

He lays no claim to renown or fame.

Only a few remember his name.

We may not know from whence he came,

But he's our brother just the same.

He sowed the seeds for us to reap,

He paved the way so we could meet.

Ever humble yet somewhat proud,

Ever alert to keep his vows.

His stored up wisdom of many years

He leaves to us if we could only hear.

We are Brothers; Let's act as such,

For the years of the aged have seen much.

Valley

I have been through the valley of weeping

The valley of sorrow and pain:

But the "God of all comfort" was with me,

At hand to uphold and sustain.

As the earth needs the clouds and the sunshine,

Our souls need both sorrow and joy;

So He places us oft in the furnace,

The dross from the gold to destroy.

When He leads through some valley of trouble,

His powerful hand we can trace;

For the trials and sorrows He sends us

Are part of His lessons of grace.

Oft we shrink from the purging and pruning,

Forgetting the Husbandman knows

The deeper the cutting and paring,

The richer the cluster that grows.

Well He knows that affliction is needed;

He has a wise purpose in view,

And in the dark valley He whispers,

"Hereafter thou'lt know what I do."

As we travel through life's shadowed valley,

Fresh springs of His love ever rise;

And we learn that our sorrows and losses

Are blessings just sent in disguise.

So we'll follow wherever He leadeth,

Though pathways be dreary or bright;

For we've proof that our God can give comfort,

Our God can give songs in the night.
