Something to Think About

MASONIC EDUCATION PROGRAM

Steven G. Tiner M\ E \ Grand High Priest of GA

I’ve enjoyed my time in Arizona. It’s a state with a great Masonic heritage. And, it’s a state of pyramids. Wait. Egypt is known for pyramids, right? Not Arizona. Well, think again. Arizona has her own set of pyramids. Of course, the letter A in Arizona, is, itself, a Pyramid. But, I’m thinking of two prominent burial sites, a former new age shop, and a church. Let’s look at some of Arizona’s pyramids:

Charles Debrille Poston’s grave is the first. Poston was referred to as the “Father of Arizona” due to his efforts lobbying for creation of the territory.

Poston’s remains were laid to rest in this pyramid shaped monument at the summit of Poston’s Butte near Florence, Arizona.

Then, there’s the burial site of George Wiley Hunt. Hunt served seven terms as Arizona’s first governor. He was a Freemason. Hunt died in 1934 and he was laid to rest in Phoenix’s Papago Park in the Hunt family mausoleum, which was constructed in the style of a white-tiled Egyptian pyramid.

Then, Valle, AZ has its famous pair of pyramids near the intersection of Hwy. 64 and Hwy. 180. The front pyramid, a three story building, houses a hardware shop while the back pyramid is a part of the shop’s storage.

Then, there’s Capstone Cathedral in Phoenix. Built in 1973, and holding 4,000 people, it’s a landmark in the valley of Arizona.

Now, why am I telling you about Pyramids in Arizona that have caught my attention? And, what in the world do Pyramids have to do with Royal Arch Masonry? Hold that thought.
