Senior Warden's Corner

Brethren,

I first wish to apologize for not getting the July Trestleboard written. Things have been hectic on my end. I guess I had too many things going. I was elected as Most Illustrious Grand Master of the Grand Council of Arizona. It is the second Grand body in the York Rite and provide information to further understand the Royal Arch. I hope everyone had a great summer and now we are looking for that weather that makes us happy to be in Arizona. We compiling the birthdays this month I noticed that we have two Brothers who have hit that magic mark in Freemasonry, 50 years. Congratulations to Terry Tanner and Ted Palmer from all of us and look forward to many more.

Bill Greenen, SW

Something to Think About

"Intolerance is the Arch-enemy of Freemasonry. Toleration is one of the chief foundation stones of the Fraternity." Universality and Brotherly Love are taught in a Masonic Lodge, even so, intolerance has had its grip upon the Brotherhood, and it does its undermining
work. No organization has as much power to resist this, disease of intolerance, as Freemasonry has; we need to guard against intolerance both in and outside of the lodge. If we catch ourselves being intolerant we should correct it immediately in ourselves. Intolerance
has destroyed more of the good in the world than any other one thing."

I do a lot of reading, and consequently I learn a lot from many people in the present as well as from the past. Brother Edmund Burke [ii] said 'The only thing necessary for the triumph of evil is for good men to do nothing.' He is saying that good men should be intolerant of evil; we as Masons are not taught to tolerate illegal and immoral conduct. (It seems to me that we need to be use our intolerance to help lead, to teach ourselves and others to be more gentlemanly in our everyday conduct.) Being intolerant does not give us license to be less than patient and kind with our fellows or our fellow man.

These things are not easy: To be patient and kind, like being tolerant, including being patient, calm, and kind, in our intolerance; it is a difficult thing to master, but with effort it can be mastered: That's subduing our passions. Very few things in life that are worthwhile come to us without effort; some of those few things are gifts others give to us, such as their love, kindness, tolerance, and patience. Those are some of the things we can also give to others; giving these things to others is easier when it involves those we love, but we can, through effort, learn to give these things to others who are not family members or loved ones. If we
really have Brotherly Love in our hearts for our Masonic Brethren it's easier for us too, and as a minister friend of mine says we need to give those things to ourselves as well; many times those we are most intolerant of is ourselves, intolerant of our own shortcomings.

Freemasons treat people fairly, with dignity and respect; they are tolerant of others to have the right to their own opinions, and to worship the religion of our choice.

It has been said that one of the saddest lessons a man learns, and re-learns, throughout his life is that not everyone wishes him well: That is a very positive way to say that there are people in the world who wish harm to others and are willing to inflict it for their own purposes.
