Master Corner

Brethren,

Happy New Year to all! This time is always a good time of year because we are more prone to look forward than usual toward a new year. It is my privilege, once again, to be Master of White Mountain Lodge. The first time, back in 2002, I was a fairly new Mason and thanks to all my Brothers, especially MWB Oscar Lyon, I made it through. We started our comeback as a lodge into the community with the Bike for Books program. Received some press for the first time in a long time and I started my third year doing this publication. We have come a long ways since that time but I must say that we still have a long road ahead to return to the glory days of Freemasonry in the Globe/Miami area. The Masters following me continued to breath life back into the lodge of which I'm exceedingly pleased. As I said, we have a long road ahead.

I would like to continue that journey by adding a new program this year which has been done by many lodges successfully and that is the Child ID Program. It is a program supported by Grand Lodge where we gather necessary information concerning our children including picture, DNS, voice samples, fingerprints and give them to their parents for safe keeping in case, God forbid, they may need them to search for them if they become missing. This program is design specifically for this purpose and retains absolutely no information by us. The hardware and software is obtainable from Grand Lodge and we would supply the supplies (picture paper, swabs, CD disks etc). We can work with schools and law enforcement as a coordinated effort. I plan on doing this maybe once a quarter on a Saturday. If you like to support this program, please let me know.

Only together can we make a difference.

Thank you.

Bill Greenen, Master

Senior Wardens Corner

There are many ways to work in the quarry: Some give rides to Brethren in need, others mentor the ritual, some go through the line many times over, some labor in the station of the secretary well beyond what is reasonable, while others toil at some other aspect of the craft. Each is a noble effort that adds another piece to the Temple, either as strength or ornament. None of our sweat is ever wasted—especially so if not done in expectation of some external reward. I am humbled to be included in the company of such men, such brothers of White Mountain #3, and will work to be worthy of your trust.

Something to Think About

THE MARK MASTER'S DEGREE By Steven G. Tiner, General Grand Scriber

PART ONE

To the doors of the Chapter room comes the young Mason, fresh from the Altar of the Symbolic Degrees, where he has served due time as an Apprentice, wrought therein as a Fellow Craft, and now comes bearing the title of Master with the working tools in his hand, eagerly seeking more light and ready to prove his skill. He knows that Capitular Masonry will take him farther into this new and interesting science, and he wants to proceed and learn. He now enters, symbolically, upon the responsibilities of life. Henceforth his work will be judged on its own merits. It must be good, true, and square. Masonry is moral geometry. The angles must all be right angles; the surfaces must all be square; length, breadth, and height are all equal. Of course, these dimensions are symbolical of the proportions of a perfect man. Our imperfect work in these earthly quarries is rejected. We are all imperfect and lopsided in one way or another, so we must try again and again. It is an example of the geometry of manhood.

The opening ceremony of a Lodge of Mark Masters resembles that of those degrees which precede it. It stresses the relationship of Capitular Masonry to that of the Symbolic Lodge. The minimum number necessary to compose a Lodge of Mark Master Masons has symbolic significance to the degree beyond the "rational explanation." The number eight is esteemed the first cube (2x2x2). The number eight symbolizes perfection, the very work which stands the test of the Grand Overseer's Square. The Candidate enters the Lodge room as a craftsman. When he was last here, the inspired genius of the Temple was removed by death. Yet, the work must now go on. He returns to the quarries to resume his labors. There is little doubt that the Mark Master's Degree was, at one time, a part of the Fellowcraft degree. This is evidenced, in part, by the fact, that the candidate is being ADVANCED. In reality, it is no ADVANCEMENT for a Master Mason to be made a Mark Master. It is not a symbolic advancement because it takes a Master Mason, who has learned acute angles back to "right angles, horizontals, and perpendiculars." That's a step backward symbolically. It is not an advancement morally, either, as the Master Mason has moved beyond the lessons imparted in this degree. For a Fellowcraft, however, this degree IS AN ADVANCEMENT. It is so both ethically and symbolically from where he was left at the close of the Second degree.
