Master Corner

Brethren,

I would like to thank all the Brethren at the lodge in January in whole heartedly endorse the Child ID Program for the lodge. We have a Brother who will be attending the Lodge Saturday 2/13 to tell us all about it and offer his assistance in presenting it to the community. Please attend if possible, for this will be another big step in providing community support. There is some cost associated with the program so if anyone is interested in sending in any contributions toward this or the Bike for Books programs, just send it to the lodge and add notes to your check that it is for the charity fund and it will be tax deductible. I'm looking forward to an exciting year.

Bill Greenen, Master

Senior Wardens Corner

Brethren, I wish to acknowledge the wisdom of our Worshipful Master Bill Greenen who has caused me to be infused with more light through the benefit of Masonic Travel. Early on in his mentoring of me, he extolled the virtue of attending other Lodges and going to conferences. Having recently retired I inwardly groaned, thinking I had earned my rest, but Worshipful was not to be easily put off and his enthusiasm and open friendship overcame my reluctance. Soon, I was off to various Lodges around the state and attending conferences in and out of state—Four Corners being one of my favorites. The more I was out and about as a Mason, the more I came to understand about Masonry and to imbibe the heady broth of fellowship. Your home Lodge is not a nest; it is a launch pad. Certainly it is a safe haven to be returned to time and again after each adventure, but it is not intended to limit you. Thanks, Worshipful, for making me a fellow traveler.

Something to Think About

THE MARK MASTER'S DEGREE By Steven G. Tiner, General Grand Scriber

THE MARK MASTER'S DEGREE

PART TWO

The Candidate for the Mark Master's Degree presents himself as a Fellowcraft and proves himself to be such. The Mark Master receives "wages" as does the Fellowcraft with a subtle distinction. The Mark Master is paid in "coin", the Fellowcraft in "Corn, Wine, and Oil."Corn, Wine and Oil were commodities for which Israel was famous. Tyre received imports of Corn, Wine, and Oil from Israel, as partial payment for their exports in the building of King Solomon's Temple. These symbols were esteemed as the support of life and the means of refreshment. David, in the 104th Psalm, and the 15th verse wrote of "wine that maketh glad the heart of man, oil to make his face shine, and bread which strengtheneth man's heart." In the beautiful 23rd Psalm, "Thou preparest a table before me" (corn) "thou anointest my head with oil" (oil), "my cup runneth over" (wine). When you travel from Egypt to Israel, you experience a tremendous change in landscape. You leave Egypt and her desolate sands and cross into Israel and find that the endless deserts have been replaced by rolling hills. Instead of sand there is now grass. It's a beautiful change of scenery. You have entered a land of corn, wine, and oil, a land of abundance, flowing with milk and honey. In Oriental Philosophy, Francis Grant refers to the symbolism of wine, telling us that "God was at once the wine of life and the Wine Bearer." He adds, "...few westerners have ever glimmered that 'the' wine was not the wine of men, but the ecstatic inflow of a religious mystic experience."Here then is the wage of the Fellowcraft: the corn which nourishes his physical body, the oil, the refresher of his physical body, "that which makes his face shine", and the wine of religious mystic experience.

When "passed to the degree of Fellowcraft", the Mark Master was paid with corn, wine, and oil. Now, being ADVANCED, he is paid in COIN, which he can use to purchase that of his own choosing. Now, ADVANCED, he's expected to have a greater sense of discrimination. He has now, advanced knowledge. Before, he was just provided for by his superiors. He had no freedom of choice. Now, he is paid and has the latitude to select the fruits of his own labors.Waite says that the Mark Master's Degree used to be practiced under an old constitution derived from the Grand Lodge of York. He says that it would be worked prior to the closing of the second degree. The Mark Master was a continuation of the Fellowcraft degree.

The Fellowcraft degree is one of learning. The Mark Master's degree is one of application of that which has been learned. The Fellowcraft speculates. The Mark Master operates.
